Here’s your chance in this class to make a personalized quilt tote bag and be ready for the SNMFQ “Bag Competition”. Make your bag in the morning, and then personalizing your bag by decorating with applique fusible art to make a one-of-a-kind bag to hold your handwork and tools. Choose bright, fun, holiday or theme fabric for your tote - make it shout! For decorating your bag, bring design ideas to be inspired by or simply create free form images on your bag with fusible applique.

In this class we will be making a Quilter’s purse/ tote bag and decorating your bag with fun, easy, fusible applique artwork of your choice. Sue will be using a tote pattern from Missouri Star Co., a Quilter’s Daily Deal.

Charm Bag supply list:

1 charm pack or (12) 5” x 5” squares [for both front and back of bag]

1  8” x 14” rectangle  of coordinating fabric [for the bottom]

1  4” strip fabric cut the width of fabric ~ approx.= 40”- 42”

1 button or covered button or closure for the bag

1  3” square of fabric for covering the button

1  1½” x 5” piece of fabric for loop (to close button)

1 piece of batting (or fusible fleece) a few inches bigger than the outside bag piece (about 27” x 16”)

Scissors, about a dozen pins, pressing cloth, rotary mat and rotary cutter, 18” or longer ruler, basic sewing supplies

Sewing Machine: clean & in good working order (must be able to drop feed dogs for free motion machine quilting)

Regular sewing/piecing foot and free motion machine quilting foot

Thread to match your background fabric, your tote handles fabric and your appliqued motif (I often use black as an outline thread color)

Optional: small travel iron and pressing board

For the artistic decoration of your bags, bring scraps of pre-fused fabrics that will coordinate and show up well on the charm squares of the tote bag. Fusible webs, such as Pellon 805, Misty Fuse, Heat and Bond Lite, Steam a Seam 2 lite, are usually available in any quilt shop or large retail stores. If you are unsure of your design, bring fabric and the fusible web and we can create in class. You can use pictorial fabrics with fish, animals, flowers or look onto Free Clip Art for ideas. Look through quilt magazines or Pinterest for interesting designs. Be creative. The sides of the tote bags measure about 10”H x 13”W
